Dyslexia Info

Dyslexia Is:

Children and adults with dyslexia simply have a neurological structure that causes their brains to process and interpret information differently.

 It is characterized by:

  • difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition
  • poor spelling (encoding)
  • poor word attack skills (decoding)

While many children with dyslexia flip or reverse their letters, not all do.

Dyslexia is Not:

  • A sign of poor intelligence
  • An indicator of laziness
  • The result of impaired vision

Determining Dyslexia:

Not all individuals who have difficulty reading have dyslexia. Formal testing is the only way to confirm a diagnosis of suspected dyslexia.  Dyslexia Direct offers services for educational diagnostic testing to diagnose various learning disabilities and determine need for intervention and accommodations.   Additionally, we work as partners with the Dyslexia Center of Austin  to support their mission and also provide services through their system. While it is not required that your child have a dyslexia diagnosis to participate in Take Flight, testing is a helpful tool.
